Mike the wire pickup arrives with a bang in the USA.
The 12 gauge wire pickup has arrived at the shop of Mike the Cableman, one of the UK’s best selling vintage accessories and it has become a favourite among our customers.
Mike the cableman has a long and proud history and was born on a farm in West Midlands, England, where his father Mike worked in the copper industry.
The shop has become an integral part of the history of Mike, which started with the cable he was given as a child.
Mike, now 65, says that he and his brother Dave were both born on the same day in 1962.
“My dad’s a very proud man, he worked in his own business in West Sussex for over 50 years and I was his son,” Mike said.
“When I was born I was just like all of my brothers, but my dad wanted me to work in the wire business and I did.”
Mike has worked for cable and wire companies including V-Cable, Cable & Wireless, and Cable & Wire for more than 25 years.
He is now retired from his trade, but has been making wire for more ten years.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to make a wire pickup, but it’s always taken a lot longer than I’d like,” he said.
Mike started by making wire and then got into the hobby of cable picking.
He worked with other old school craftsmen and it took him almost 20 years to make his first wire pickup.
“I started out with the basic wire I’d used for years.
I’d buy copper wires from the local shop, pick them, and use them as scrap metal. “
At one stage I was making wire from old, broken, abandoned copper wires.
I made a lot of wire from copper, but I started using wire from the new and improved wire that was coming out of Europe. “
By the time I’d made my first pick, I had an enormous amount of knowledge and I knew how to work with the wire.
I would work with my dad to make sure that the pick fit perfectly and was perfectly straight. “
Once I’d finished a pick, it was time to make the final touches.
Mike says he has been working on his shop for the past 15 years, but he is not yet ready to release his first pickup to the public. “
That’s when I started to build up my own shop, which is now in my family home.”
Mike says he has been working on his shop for the past 15 years, but he is not yet ready to release his first pickup to the public.
“The shop has been in my parents’ garage for the last few years, it’s been my only work place for the entire time I’ve been making it,” he explained.
“There’s still lots of work to be done but we have a lot to do.”
Mike’s first pickup will be available in the US from June 12, 2018, and in the United Kingdom from April 4, 2018.
Mike has also been working to get a UK version of the pickup in the pipeline.
“In the US, I have to wait until after my next birthday to have a pickup made, so I’ve got another year to get it made,” Mike explained.
Mike also has a few ideas for future pickups, including the option of making them out of vintage copper wire.
“A lot of people have made their first pickups out of wire, but in the past, you’ve had to spend quite a lot on the wire,” he added.
“For me, it would be a great idea to have the pickup made out of copper wire.”
Mike’s wire pickup is made from wire scrap and it is a testament to his dedication to the hobby.
“This is the only way to make my work come alive,” he says.
“After a lot work, I’ve finally managed to make something that’s been in the shop for 15 years.”
