The secret to making the best cup of coffee is having the right ingredients, according to Dr Peter Nussbaum, the chief medical officer at the British Heart Foundation.
He believes people need to start thinking about how their diet can impact the health of their children.
“People need to look at the ingredients they’re eating, whether it’s whole grains, whether they’re drinking milk, whether their diet has changed over time,” he said.
So what’s the best diet for children? “
When we put a diet like this together, it really does give a whole new perspective on what we’re eating.”
So what’s the best diet for children?
Nutrients such as iron and zinc are crucial, as are the minerals magnesium, potassium, copper and zinc.
“We can’t eat the right amount of protein for everyone, but we can eat enough protein to get the right balance of vitamins and minerals,” Dr Nussbeck said.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a daily intake of 400 to 600 grams of protein and 500 to 600 milligrams of zinc, with 150 milligram per kilogram of body weight.
The AAP also recommends people aim to get 30 to 50 grams of iron a day.
Dr Nusbaum said there was no easy way to determine what was best for your child.
“For most children, the best thing to do is to just go on the food label and check it, and that’s what most children do,” he told the ABC.
“There’s no way to tell if your child is getting the right nutrient or not.”
The health of your child’s digestive system is also important, and you need to consider whether your diet is suitable for them, Dr Nausbaum said.
It’s also important to be aware of what’s in the foods your children are eating.
“If you’re not eating a balanced diet, they won’t get the same balance of nutrients that they would if they were eating a different diet,” he explained.
“I’m not suggesting you should change your diet, but if you’re eating the wrong amount of foods, you may end up with a child who’s not getting the nutrients that are essential.”
